Janneiry is a third year Human Biology major with a minor in Global Health.

What Global Health Issues are you passionate about? I’m really interested in examining the impact of immigration status on health care and health. More specifically, I’m interested in examining how toxic stress associated with fear of deportation has been shown to have harmful effects on an individual’s long-term physical and mental health. Children are especially vulnerable to this type of trauma, which acts as a barrier to normal physical and mental development and health.

Field Experience: I’m currently a part of the International Health Collective here at UCSD, which is a non-profit organization that aims to alleviate disparities in the San Diego-Tijuana region through a holistic, sustainable and culturally sensitive approach. Through this organization, I have been able to help train community health workers and help provide free healthcare services to underprivileged communities in Tijuana-Progreso and San Juanico.

Hobbies: My hobbies include photography, watching movies at movie theaters I’ve never been to, and going to Disneyland.

Field Experience: As part of the Break Away Global Service (BAGS) organization in ERC, I traveled to San Ignacio, Belize to work on the construction of a transitional foster care home. Once the home is completed, it will serve as a safe space for young women ages 16-21 who are finishing higher education or vocational training.
