UC Global Health Day 2018 – Event Recap

Sunday, April 22nd, 2018, UC San Diego hosted what was the largest UC Global Health Day to date, with over 500 participants from all UC’s!

The day-long conference featured keynote speaker Vikram Patel, the Pershing Square Professor of Global Health at Harvard University,  a plenary panel on the “UCGHI Advocacy Initiative: Catalyzing Student Advocacy into Action”, and an afternoon panel on “Immigrant and Refugee Health: From Research to Policy and Practice”.

Eighteen breakout sessions highlighted important global health topics such as gender equity and climate change. A Career and Field Experience Expo was held to introduce opportunities for students to pursue careers, post-grad education, and field experience in global health. In addition, a Research poster session comprised of 120 participants, including UC San Diego Global Health Program seniors, was held to showcase research being done in the field. Finally, the day ended with a stunning dance performance by the student group, Movement Exchange.

The event opened with Professor Thomas Csordas, Director of the UC Global Health Program and UCGHD Planning Committee Chair, followed by UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and Thomas Coates, Director of the UC Global Health Institute.

Vikram Patel, keynote speaker, was first to present during Plenary I, “Universal mental health coverage: realizing the Sustainable Development Goal aspiration”. Dr. Patel’s inspiring speech included a call to action for members of the health community to strive for health equity, stating, “the moral imperative for mental health and sustainable development is to leave no one behind by implementing evidence based community delivered care for treatment and prevention of mental disorders, embedded in a universal health coverage and empowerment framework.”

Dr. Janis Jenkins

Plenary I commentators included Dr. Janis Jenkins, Director of the Center for Global Mental Health at UC San Diego, who spoke about the importance of considering culture when delivering mental health care and Dr. Bruce Link, a Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and Sociology at UC Riverside, who followed up with the need for creativity, rigor and heart to push positive change

 

Plenary II, “The UCGHI Advocacy Initiative: Catalyzing student advocacy into action”, included Tim Mackey, Associate Professor at the UC San Diego School of Medicine as moderator, student presenters Mili Patel, Mariati Messinger, and Anshal Gupta. They spoke about the UC Grad Research Advocacy Program which involves two students per UC campus advocating for graduate research in Sacramento along with letter writing campaigns and op-eds.

The final panel, Plenary III, focused on the topic “Refugee and immigrant health: From research to policy and practice.” Speakers included Fatima Karaki, Assistant Professor at the Division of Hospital Medicine and Director of the Refugee and Asylum seeker Health Initiative at UCSF, Liliana Osorio, Deputy Director of Health Initiatives of the Americas at UC Berkeley, Adam Richards, Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine & Health Services Research UCLA, Michael Rodriguez, Professor and vice chair in the Department of Family Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine UCLA, and Kathi Anderson, Executive Director of Survivors of Torture, International . These experts gave an overview of the topic and what different organizations around the globe are doing to improve refugee and immigrant health.

The night prior to UC Global Health Day, students attended the Student Networking Reception, featuring a Global Health career panel. Students also mingled over dinner, games, and participated in the photo booth!

Panelists included Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences, Harold Simon Professor and Chief of the Division of Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine; Dr. Craig Cohen, Professor in the UCSF Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, an Attending Physician at San Francisco General Hospital and co-Director of the University of California Global Health Institute; Dr. Jaime Arredondo Sanchez Lira, ESUDO Post-Doctoral Researcher, Division of Global Public Health, UC San Diego School of Medicine; and Thongdam Pathoumthong, Admissions and Alumni Relations Officer at UCSF.

The reception was made possible by The UC Global Health Day Student Planning Committee, UC San Diego Students for Global Health, UC Global Health Institute (UCGHI), and the UC San Diego Global Health Program.
