NEW Global Health Bachelor in Science Degree (B.S.)! Effective Fall 2019

The Bachelor in Science degree will consist of a total of 24 courses, composed of 96 units. If you’re interested in switching to the B.S., when it launches in fall, you will simply be able to go into Tritonlink and change your major from the B.A. degree to the B.S. degree. Students graduating this winter, spring or summer 2019 are not eligible to switch to the B.S. degree.

The main differences between the B.A. and B.S. are:

• The B.A. in Global Health consists of a total of 17 courses and requires students to complete a two-quarter sequence senior capstone to develop a senior thesis. The B.A. has a heavier emphasis on the medical social sciences and humanities and requires students to complete a senior thesis.

• The B.S. in Global Health consists of a total of 24 courses. The B.S. has a heavier emphasis on the medical social sciences and natural sciences. The additional coursework prepares students for entry into medical and pre-health programs.

  • Students in the B.S. will not be required to enroll in the senior thesis capstone during senior year. They may have the option to apply to enroll in the thesis if there is room (applications will be sent out if this is the case – the capstone would then fulfill medical social science electives for those students). If you’re set on taking the capstone, we recommend staying enrolled as a B.A. student.

Both majors can lead you to similar career outcomes, the B.S. just incorporates some of the pre-reqs students may need to complete for pre-med or pre-health programs. Both are still good options for pre-health and pre-med students.
