Alternative Breaks are local, domestic or international service learning trips that use education of social justice issues combined with strong direct service to have a lasting impact on students and the communities they work alongside.
Refugee Connections is an organization that aims to promote refugee health. Undergraduate students will collaborate with local organizations in order to advance student’s knowledge, opportunities, and careers in the field of Global and Public health. We also aim to provide a domestic option for Global Health majors and minors to complete their field experience through volunteering with the health needs of local refugees.
Students for Integrative and Preventive Medicine (Mind Body Nutrition or MBN for short) is a non-profit student organization that aims to educate the general student populace about nutrition, health, and the food industry through professional and peer networks. MBN seeks to improve the food choices made by its members and our relationship with food, as well as create and foster a supportive network of like-minded, health-conscious individuals. MBN aims to promote health, nutrition, and wellness at UCSD and in the community by engaging in healing as a holistic approach: mentally (mind), physically (body) and dietary (nutrition).
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. We are a service club operating under the local chapter of the American Red Cross San Diego County and Imperial Counties Chapter. We focus on volunteerism and education awareness in disaster preparedness and health.
Tritons for UNICEF seeks to educate, advocate, and fundraise on behalf of children and in support of UNICEF’s lifesaving work. Tritons for UNICEF fundraises for and promotes United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). UNICEF provides humanitarian and developmental aid to children in developing countries throughout the world. UNICEF’s work primarily focuses on fostering, preserving, and improving the health of children around the globe. Thus, Tritons for UNICEF, through fundraising and advocacy, contributes to UNICEF’s advancement of children’s health and even further, Global Health.
Volunteers Around the World (VAW) is an NGO devoted to improving the standard of living for those that live in some of the most poverty stricken communities of the world. Our focus is to provide communities with access to medical treatment, medication, nutritional security, clean water, and health education. Our medical outreach will provide volunteers with an opportunity to shadow medical professionals and work side by side with experienced doctors in Latin America. Volunteers will fundraise and accumulate medicines prior to the trip to the host country. While in the country, volunteers will shadow and assist the doctors, perform triage, measure vital statistics, manage the pharmacy and teach public health classes, all under the direct supervision of experienced, local doctors.
Siku Njema Kesho Community-Based Organization aims to empower local communities by providing their children with education and health care services. We are focused on sustainable community development in Nakuru, Kenya. At the moment, we have a water tank project to improve sanitation and prevent health issues such as cholera in the community.
Global Medical Training was created on ideals to improve the conditions and well-being of a global humanity. It is grounded in the reality that palpable misery exists globally. These attitudes were combined and converted to action through the GMT concept. This has resulted in our international endeavor to provide free health care beyond the borders of North America to those people deprived of adequate access to good health care. A strong corollary objective is to provide students with a global educational experience of service to others who are less fortunate in this planetary Human Family. The trips are meant to be a heart and mind changing experience for all participants in this effort.
